QUOTE FOR THE DAY Reflecting on the Iraqi abuse scandal Amir Taheri reminds us:
What is at stake in Iraq is bigger
than Abu Ghraib. It is even bigger
than Rumsfeld and George W. Bush.
Iraq has become a battleground between
the democratic vision of the world and
the despotic and obscurantist visions
that have dominated Middle Eastern
politics for more than half a century.
Allowing the democratic vision to be
defeated because of narrow partisan
considerations in the US and Britain
would mean only one thing: The democracies
would have to return some time later
to fight an even bigger and costlier war.
